SPS
Activities
Bi-weekly Meetings
SPS holds Bi-weekly meetings
at 8 pm in 337 West Hall (the West Hall lounge). Meetings usually
start with pizza and announcements, after which there is a faculty speaker
or time to work on an outreach/inreach program.
Outreach/Inreach
SPS is dedicated to
educating the community about physics. We do demos everywhere from high
school classrooms, to the diag, to the Ann Arbor Hands On Museum.
Physics Olympiad: Each year in May the UM physics faculty
hosts a competition for high school physics students. The students
participate in various events as well as a quiz bowl. This year SPS is
creating a new event for Physics Olympiad. Email us to help out!
Solar
System Walk: As part of the UM theme semester,
there will be a model solar system stretching from the M in the diag all the
way to Rackham on April 18th 2009. They need SPSers to help staff each
planet so email us to get involved!
Physicspalooza: This is our annual outreach
event at the children's hands-on museum. We build demo's and visit the
museum for two days to show them off to children and their parents.
Social Events
Over the course of the
year, SPS holds several social events. We've gone canoeing on the
Huron, spent Halloween on a Haunted Hayride, and dressed up for the midnight
showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the State Theature. We
also hold monthly social events at the homes of members with BBQ's, movies,
and BSG marathons. Contact h-bar@umich.edu for more information.
The only
requirements for membership in the local SPS chapter are an interest in
physics and a small membership fee. Stop by our office if you have any
questions about SPS or about joining SPS.
